Saharna Monastery
Located just 1 km from Saharna-Țiglău in a beautiful forest setting, the Monastery of Saharna is one of Moldova’s oldest monastic settlements. The monastic hermitage is made up two monasteries: a cave monastery called Bunavestire and a one built above ground called Holy Trinity (Sf. Treime).
The history and age of the cave monastery is still unknown and a mystery, even to researchers while the Holy Trinity monastery dates back to the 18th century when it was founded by Vartolemeu Ciungu. It is still an active monastery of the Orthodox Church of Moldova today and a tranquil and beautiful place to visit.

Tipova Cave Monastery
One of Moldova’s most unique and dramatic sites is Tipova Cave Monastery located 200 meters above the Dneister River’s right bank built into the rock face and cliffs. Located 6km away from Saharna-Țiglău by boat on the Dneister River or 40 minutes by car, Tipova Monastery includes three religious chambers and monastic cells.
The oldest of the chambers called the Elevation of the Holy Cross is estimated to date back to the 11th century, while newer chambers date to the 15th century and played an important role in defending Moldova against Mongol and other invaders. It is even believed that Stephen the Great married one of his wives here in the 15th century.
The path to the Tipova Cave Monastery is steep and along a rock’s edge, so be sure to wear proper shoes.

Grimidon Rock
Before Saharna Monastery was built, legend says that Father Bartholomew was searching for the right place to build the monastery so that it would be close to routes to nearby villages, but secluded and far away enough so the monks would not be disturbed. Bartholomew prayed and fasted for 40 days, looking for guidance for God on the best place to construct the monastery.
On the 40th day a revelation happened where the Holy Virgin Mary appeared to him and showed him the place to build the monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity (Saharna Monastery). The miracle took place on a rock named Grimidon and as proof Mary left the imprint of her left foot in the rock. You can still see this trace today in Grimidon’s Rock and a chapel was built in honor of this miracle.
